Abstract
The preservative market is changing inresponse to market requirements for ‘greener’ productsand consumer preferences for ‘preservative-free’products. New products based on renewable resourceshave emerged, but they often have drawbacks inperformance and they can be expensive. Clariant hasdeveloped Sorbitan Caprylate, an additive based onrenewable resources that boosts the efficacy of aromaticalcohol antimicrobials whose potential cannot normallybe fully exploited because of their odour and thinningproperties. The additive also enhances the properties oforganic acids which are used as “natural” preservativesin cosmetic formulations, but are effective at low pH only.Furthermore, it builds up viscosity in rinse-off formulations,is not listed as a preservative and has an excellenttoxicological profile.
