PEPTIDES AS ANTI-AGING COMPONENTS

Peptides are short proteins with few amino acid chains. Naturally occurring human peptides regulate several cellular activities like cell proliferation, migration, inflammation, and blood vessel formation. They also act as building blocks of the three major proteins in the skin such as collagen, elastin and keratin –which are responsible for its texture, strength and elasticity. Natural peptides are generated from extracellular matrix proteins and from antimicrobial peptide protein precursors (1). Various synthetic peptides have been  developed in this decade, having applicability in extracellular matix synthesis, pigmentation, and innate immunity development (2).
