The prestigious scientific journal Nature, considered one of the most authoritative by the international scientific community, has recently published the world ranking of the best 200 academic institutions engaged in cancer research, the Nature Index 2020 Cancer Table. The University of Turin is the first and only Italian University in the ranking, placed at 176th position globally.
The presence of the University of Turin in this ranking testifies that the research conducted in its Departments keeps pace, in this rapidly evolving sector, with the institutes of the most globally present countries. The United States leads the ranking with Harvard University and appears in Nature with 85 academic institutions, followed by China with 43 academic institutions.
The Nature Index 2020 Cancer ranking considers the production of scientific articles on cancer research written between January 1, 2015 and August 31, 2019 and included in the Nature Index, a constantly updated database of affiliations of research article authors published in 82 high-quality scientific journals selected by a group of independent scientists.
The methodology used to compile this ranking is based on the number of shared articles on cancer research published from January 2015 to August 2019, referred to as Share; the number of articles published by each institution from January 2015 to August 2019, referred to as Count; and the number of articles written on the basis of international collaborations published during the same reporting period. In the Share category, the University of Turin ranks 25th globally.
More than forty years of tradition in the study of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cancer has prepared the University to successfully meet the challenge of precision medicine, aimed at ensuring a reasoned use of new anti-tumor drugs that aspire to control a precise genetic alteration, reducing toxic effects and costs.
“The basis of this excellent positioning in the ranking proposed by Nature” declares Rector Stefano Geuna “demonstrates UniTo’s ability to create interdisciplinary teams (doctors, molecular oncologists, computer scientists, physicists, engineers, mathematicians) that address the oncological pathology at 360 degrees by proposing diagnostic and therapeutic pathways at the frontier”.
The placement of the University of Turin in this top 200 reflects other excellent results achieved by the University in cancer research last year. The Highly Cited Researchers list of Clarivate Analytics has identified the scientists who have shown significant influence in the world of cancer research through the publication of highly cited articles (top 1% worldwide) in the last decade, three of these scientists belong to the University of Turin. In addition, also in 2019, the U.S. News & World Report agency published the rankings of the best universities in the world for 2020 and the position achieved by UniTo in the ranking of the Oncology discipline was excellent. Not only did the University rank 38th globally, but in this discipline it was also the first Italian University.
