Abstract
Vitamins, the West love them, East is courting them
Multivitamins and other dietary supplements are used by the majority of the U.S adults, but the perception among the same users is that the micronutrients should in fact be assumed through food. These are the conclusions of a survey conducted on by Annette Dickinson, Douglas MacKay and Andrea Wong, of Dickinson Consulting LLC, and sponsored by the U.S. Council for Responsible Nutrition intended to highlight the consumers attitudes about the dietary supplements. Interestingly enough, the results of the study suggest that users of vitamins supplements and dietary supplements tend to adopt a healthier lifestyle and a better dietary regimen. 9 out of ten participants declared that “multivitamins and supplements of calcium and/or vitamin D can help meet nutrient needs when desirable intakes are not achieved through food alone. At the same time, 80 % agreed that dietary supplements should not be used to replace healthy dietary or lifestyle habits, and 82 % agreed that people considering taking a high dose, single nutrient supplement should talk with their physician.
