Berg + Schmidt enables effective use of rutin in cosmetics

HPC Today
  • New manufacturing process reduces particle size to sub-micrometre scale
  • Greater antioxidant effectiveness against skin aging and UV radiation damage

At this year’s In-Cosmetics in Amsterdam (booth B140) Berg + Schmidt GmbH & Co. KG will be showing its BergaCare SmartCrystals Rutin, a powerful rutin concentrate. The new product’s effect is many times stronger than conventionally prepared rutin. This is achieved through a patented process in which the antioxidant’s particle size is reduced to the sub-micrometre scale. This sophisticated product is targeted at cosmetics producers looking to offer their customers added value. The product prevents skin aging and UV radiation damage more effectively. In this form, the rutin is also easier to process industrially.
In this new rutin format from Berg + Schmidt, the rutin particle size is reduced to the sub-micrometer scale in a patented process. At this scale, the material’s physical properties are fundamentally altered. BergaCare SmartCrystals Rutin has an elevated saturation solubility and dissolution rate. Both factors significantly raise the biological effectiveness of the substance. The individual particles also adhere better and more evenly to the skin, so the rutin can act on it for a longer time.
Rutin is one of the strongest natural antioxidants, and protects the skin from damaging UV radiation and aggressive free radicals. It also counteracts the effects of skin conditions such as rosacea and couperosis. But rutin normally dissolves poorly, which limits its usefulness since in skin formulations it does not penetrate into deeper skin layers and so cannot have any effect there. Therefore, rutin has up until now been used in a derivatized form, in which it is much less active. Berg + Schmidt now solves this problem with its SmartCrystals technology.
BergaCare SmartCrystals Rutin is offered as an aqueous suspension concentrate stabilised against aggregation. Its use is very straightforward. The concentrate is simply added to the skin formulation in the final manufacturing step. Possible applications for this high-tech ingredient are facial creams, lotions, masks, serums, aqueous gels, and UV protection and anti-aging products.
Dr. Sabilla Zhong, Product Manager at Berg + Schmidt, will present on the product backround and effects on 18 April 2018, the second day of In-Cosmetics. This technical seminar will take place 11:00 – 11:30 in Technical Seminars Theatre 1.
