Croda, who create, make and sell innovative, sustainable, high performance speciality chemicals that are relied on by industries and consumers everywhere, has just been awarded the runner-up prize for Sustainability Leadership at the recent Sustainable Beauty Awards, organised by Organic Monitor.
Held in Paris, the 3rdannual Sustainable Beauty Awards recognise businesses that continue to push boundaries for sustainability in beauty and personal care. In receiving the award, Croda has clearly demonstrated its leadership in sustainability through key aspects of its programme such as their; commitment to renewable raw material sourcing with 66.1% derived from renewables in 2015, much higher than the average of Croda’s peers; and a focus on sustainable product development with their embedment of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry into global R&T, with the majority of new products over recent years scoring at least 11 out of 12.
Croda’s manufacturing operations were also recognised through the entry; with 24.2% of the Group’s energy coming from non-fossil fuel sources in 2015, around half of which is generated by their own investment in renewable energy including solar panels, a wind turbine and landfill gas. They are also investing in the construction of the first manufacturing site in North America that will use ethylene oxide derived from bio-ethanol and will lead to the production of 100% renewable non-ionic surfactants. This is alongside ongoing efforts to reduce water usage, emissions and waste to landfill.
After collecting the award, Chris Sayner, Vice President of Customer Alliances within Sustainability at Croda said: “I was very proud to collect this award on behalf of our company; it recognises the sustainability efforts of all our employees”.
Looking to the future, Croda will continue their leadership in developing the physical certified supply chains for palm oil derivatives and build on their current position with the Ingredient Integrity™ Programme that will focus on the positive impacts that their products have across their life time.
This award comes shortly after Croda was also placed in the top 1% of all companies assessed by EcoVadis, a sustainability assessment platform, achieving Gold Status for the last three consecutive years. EcoVadis’ scoring methodology, which rates more than 20,000 companies, looks at environmental, labour, fair business and sustainable procurement practices.
