The interest for continuous manufacturing in the speciality chemical and pharmaceutical industry has skyrocketed in the past 2 to 4 years. Since the last Achema of 2018 Flowid has doubled their turnover year over year with the design and manufacturing of Flow Skids. Key is that continuous manufacturing must make sense – chemically and financially. Most of the time the best solution is hybrid: integrating the best available technologies in a modular plant. Next to sufficient chemical understanding process engineering, 3D design, electrical and instrumentation knowledge are essential for the best Flow Solution.
In addition we should not forget material of construction expertise as well as procurement and certification skills.
The drivers for considering Flow are:

We see drivers for considering a flow solution are very much customer specific and standard solutions are few.
It is neither feasible nor advisable to just transfer a batch process into a continuous process without taking into account all limitations and opportunities. Fit for Flow already starts in the early research phase. Excellent cooperation with our customers and partnerships with our suppliers has proven to be essential to design and manufacture successfully Flow Skids that meet our customers overall demand. Let us not forget that Scale up from lab to pilot and to production is always the goal.
To tackle mass transfer and heat transfer issues known for many chemical reactions Flowid developed their dynamic reactor technology, the SpinPro reactors. For multiphase and precipitation reactions these reactors have proven to be an excellent solution in pilot and 24/7 production. Throughput ranges from a few ml/ minute to thousands of liters/ hour.
Halogenation and nitration reactions have been converted to flow with our SpinPro reactors successfully. Recently we published in cooperation with Albemarle in OPR&D the excellent results for Organolithium reactions with the SpinPro dynamic reactor technology.
