Detergency performance of α-Methyl Ester Sulphonate (MES) in different water hardness conditions was investigated and its cleaning performance compared against LAS. Results demonstrated that MES has higher soil removal index, and its soil removal capability do not affect drastically with the increase of water hardness relative to LAS. Furthermore, incorporation of MES improved the cleaning performance of surfactant mixtures, as well as rendering the surfactant mixture stay functional at higher water hardness level.
