Abstract
The preservative market is changing inresponse to market requirements for ‘greener’ products and consumer preferences for ‘preservative-free’products. New products based on renewable resources have emerged, but they often have drawbacks in performance and they can be expensive. Clariant has developed Sorbitan Caprylate, an additive based on renewable resources that boosts the efficacy of aromaticalcohol antimicrobials whose potential cannot normallybe fully exploited because of their odour and thinning properties. The additive also enhances the properties oforganic acids which are used as “natural” preservativesin cosmetic formulations, but are effective at low pH only.Furthermore, it builds up viscosity in rinse-off formulations,is not listed as a preservative and has an excellenttoxicological profile.
