Considerations on Sustainability

If I take a helicopter view of the surfactants trends these days, sustainability ranks at the top, as shown, for example at the number of papers on the subject presented at the 4th ACI Future of Surfactants Summit held in Madrid on the 6th and 7th February of this year.
This should not come as a surprise: the regulatory burden for introducing new molecules demands such heavy investments against the uncertain perspective of a commercial return that developments in that direction are totally discouraged.
Conversely, exploring routes to make more efficiently existing structures and/or using renewable resources allows for original technological approaches with the perspective of financial rewards. As it has been correctively observed sustainability and long-term financial performance are correlated. Furthermore there are difficult-to-measure but real non-material rewards (e.g. image with the formulators, which in turn may claim an ecological approach in their advertising).
