Expert insights on protein nutrition: Where and why?
Protein research and discussion has been extensive over recent years in relation to physical activity, strenuous exercise and healthy ageing. Both in younger and older people some extra protein intake appears beneficial on top of the exercise signal for protein synthesis. It has also become clear that lifestyle interventions targeted at preserving muscle mass and strength with advancing age is crucial to facilitate longer, healthier and more vital living. Because protein has the most pronounced effect on thermogenesis and satiety it is the macronutrient that deserves most attention to help preserve lean body mass, which in turn is associated with lower risk of chronic derangements of metabolism ultimately leading to more proneness for diabetes, cardiovascular or cancer development.
