Abstract
Biocides are a necessary component of architecturalcoatings, extending their service lives by preventingmicrobial defacement. However, they have thepotential to enter surface waters in runoff from buildingfaçades during driving rain events. Increased regulationnecessitates a closer look at the release process, bothfor proper source input estimations for regulators, andproduct development insights for producers. The maturefi eld of controlled release offers a vast information store ofresearch that can be applied to this particular problem, with adjustments made for problem-specifi c conditionssuch as how wind driven rain leads to façade runoff.
