Abstract
Efficient and sustainable biocatalytic processes rely on cheapenzymes and their capability to perform selective chemicalreactions. A major limitation of industrial process development is thelack of robust enzymes with novel functions or suitable propertiesfor industrial application on non natural substrates in non naturalenvironments. Therefore, a strong focus in industrial biotechnology and biocatalysisis on exploiting the natural and laboratory-generated diversity ofenzymes. New enzymes would further increase the specificity andselectivity of chemical reactions and would drive the spectrum ofbiocatalytic processes into new directions.
