AUTHORITIES IN SWEDEN APPROVE ACQUISITION OF FALBYGDENS OST
Arla’s purchase of Falbygdens Ost from the food company Atria has now been approved by the Swedish Competition Authority. Arla takes over operations at the company as of 1 April 2015. The acquisition is fully in line with Arla’s strategy to promote and develop the premium cheese segment. “This is a good deal for customers, consumers and Arla’s owners. The employees at Falbygdens Ost represent a proud tradition of cheese-making, and we are now in a position to work closely with them to develop passion and interest in cheese among customers and consumers alike. Falbygdens Ost is a strategic complement to Arla’s own cheese-making business, and the purchase ensures profitable milk sales for our owners – the Arla farmers” explains Henri de Sauvage, Executive Vice President for Arla in Sweden. Following the approval from the Swedish Competition Authority, the integration work can now move from the planning phase to implementation, and negotiations can be completed with the local union organisations. The project to integrate Falbygdens Ost into Arla is the responsibility of Alex Racoveanu, Senior Integration Manager. Working with a team comprising representatives from the Supply Chain, Commercial, IT, HR and Communication departments, Alex is looking to complete the integration process within a year.

A SEAWEED THAT'S GOOD FOR HEALTH
A scientific study has demonstrated the efficacy of the phytocomplex from Ascophyllum nodosum in helping to treat metabolic syndrome. Ischaemic heart disease is now the leading cause of premature death in the Western world, with an annual toll, in human lives, in excess of 7 million. Among the main risk factors are obesity and dyslipidaemia, that is to say the increase of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in the blood. The cardiovascular threat can be significantly reduced with a good diet, regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, possibly supplemented by functional foods and supplements that have a specific action. This is the case with the phytocomplex Ascophyllum nodosum, the Arctic seaweed harvested and processed in a sustainable and innovative way in Norway's more northern regions. Rich in iodine, natural anti-oxidants, algal carotenoids, polyphenols and fucoidans, this sea weed has been processed for more than 75 years by Algea, a subsidiary of the Valagro Group. At the forefront of innovation and respect for the environment, Valagro's research has perfected the quality of Algea products using its own exclusive Geapower technology. Some of the outstanding results achieved include AlgeaFood Phyto, a natural ingredient for human nutrition that encourages the reduction of abdominal fat and the maintenance of correct trigylceride levels in the blood.

INULIN PROVEN EFFECTS ON REDUCING GLYCEMIC RESPONSE
Increasing studies support the importance of a reduced glycemic response within our diet contributing, amongst others, to potentially lower the incidence of type-2 diabetes. Food industry can now satisfy consumer need by developing products that reduce glycaemic response and lower sugar content so also reducing the caloric intake, and that taste as good as the original foods.

AROMA RECOVERY IN SOLUBLE COFFEE PROCESS
The Spinning Cone Column can be used to capture intense fresh-roasted or fresh-brewed aroma characteristics by literally brewing the coffee or tea within the Spinning Cone Column itself. The Spinning Cone Column is unique among distillation systems in that it is able to process feed streams with high proportions of suspended solids. If a slurry of roast and ground coffee beans (or tea leaf) and cold water is fed into the SCC, it is possible to capture all of the coffee (or tea) aroma, including top-notes, reminiscent of a fresh brew. Several SCC parameters can be adjusted to control the profile of the essence recovered. This allows flavour houses and beverage manufacturers to produce different flavour profiles from the same source material. Many of Flavourtech’s existing customers report that prior to using the Spinning Cone Column up to 90% of their flavour was lost between roasting of the coffee bean and consumption of the soluble product.

FIT AND HEALTHY FOR SPRING WITH VITAMINS
New affinity column BioteX of LCTech GmbH facilitates the clean-up for the biotin analysis – automated and manual. Cough, cold, influenza … these days lots of people are fighting against coughs and sneezes in the moment and are trying to consume as many vitamins as possible. Often these vitamins are taken in format of vitamin tablets, too. But how much of a vitamin can really be found in a tablet? Biotin is a naturally occurring vitamin that belongs to the family of B vitamins (B7) and is one of the water-soluble vitamins. It can be found ubiquitously in many foods. The biotin concentration supports a vitamin-rich diet and is consequently found in many vitamin drinks, vitamin tablets or food supplements. Egg yolk, soybeans and liver are amongst the foods that are high in biotin content. LCTech has developed the affinity column BioteX that impresses with a fast processing time below two hours (depending on sample volume), very good recoveries (biotin > 90 %) and a long shelf life of 9 month. BioteX enables an effective clean-up of biotin from different sample material and in parallel the sample preparation within the food analysis via UV-detection for analysis with HPLC or LC/MS. The 3 mL column made of polypropylene is suitable for both manual and automated handling.
