Research on food import trade and situation of quality and safety in China

Abstract
Imported food has become an important source of food for consumers in China, with continuous growth in economic development and improvement in people’ life quality. However, amount of unqualified food has been increasing as value and quantity of imported food keep on rising. Based on presentation of changes in volume of imported food, this paper is designed to focus on safety and quality of imported food, set forth the supervision of food imports in China, and to propose suggestions for improving imported food safety.
INTRODUCTION
Under development of trade globalization, world food trade is deeply moving forward multi-fields and all directions, playing an impact on countries all over the world more profoundly than ever before. Since Reform and Opening up, China food industry and food trade have never been so tightly connected with the whole world as present. Along with rapid economic growth in China, Per-capita disposable income and consumption capacity have increased rapidly (1, 2). Imported food has become an important source of food for consumers in China, and plays an increasingly significant part in satisfying consumption demand of various food and balancing the structure of food demand, optimizing food industry structure (3). At the same time, while domestic consumers’ expectation on imported food safety is getting higher and higher (4). However, the amount of unqualified imported food is increasing in recent years, which makes it one of the major works in guarantee food safety in China.
